Nick practiced complex environmental litigation at a prominent law firm in Los Angeles and Silicon Valley prior to becoming a lateral consultant. In 1998, fueled by a venture capital investment, he launched Karapetian Rubin as a co-founding partner. Over the past 20+ years, he has trained more than a dozen former attorneys in the art and science of legal recruiting and remains passionate about helping partners navigate the complex process of a lateral move. Today, as managing partner, he oversees the broad activities of fellow placement consultants, recruiters and research assistants at Karapetian Rubin. Using a selective approach, Nick personally handles the search of partners and groups nationally. Additionally, Nick’s competencies include working with law firms who are looking to bring in a strategic partner or group.
Nick holds a Juris Doctorate degree from Loyola Law School and a Bachelors degree from Cal State University, Northridge.

Gavin's concentration is in the lateral movement of partners with portable books of business ranging from $750K to upwards of $10M per year. Gavin has developed longstanding relationships with individual partners by drawing upon his deep understanding of the legal marketplace and using it to educate his clientele through the intricacies of a lateral move. Gavin has provided longstanding legal recruiting and placement services to numerous, respected and influential AmLaw 200 firms as well as specialized boutiques. Institutionally, he is responsible for ensuring that the Firm adheres to the highest principles in servicing the needs of it's client firms while also producing the best possible outcomes for its lateral candidates.
Prior to founding Karapetian Rubin, he was a practicing litigator for a mid-sized, East Coast commercial litigation firm where, at a relatively young age, he obtained significant trial experience and was responsible for the origination of substantial business.
Gavin maintains memberships in the American Bar Association and the Los Angeles Bar Association, where he was an executive committee member of the Law Practice Management Section.
Joel counsels and assists partners considering a lateral move. Additionally, he assists AmLaw 200 firms in the strategic recruitment of partners helping to grow as well as to open new offices. Joel is a former in-house attorney for Disney and Screen Actors Guild.
Todd began his attorney search career more than eight years ago. Since then, he has meticulously listened to the professional objectives of each of his candidates, and carefully crafted searches based upon their own personal criteria. He believes that it is his mission to assist each candidate with achieving their own unique goals, as well as providing unparalleled support throughout the entire search, interview, and on-boarding process.
Karen focuses on the placement of associate attorneys with law firms throughout California. With more than 13 years of legal recruiting experience, Karen has worked in the recruiting departments of two prominent AM LAW Firms in Los Angeles, Hogan Lovells and Foley & Lardner. Having been on the receiving end of countless resume submissions, she knows what firms are looking for and how to present her candidates in the best possible light.
Bryan spent many years working in a large law firm and then as Counsel at a major insurance carrier working on a variety of business, employment, professional malpractice, and insurance coverage matters. As a result of this work, and through his ongoing practice as a sole practitioner, he has developed a unique understanding of the legal profession that help inform and guide his recruiting efforts. His background allows him to better listen to and appreciate a candidate’s motivations for considering a move. It also helps him assist the consultants at Karapetian Rubin in evaluating opportunities for candidates.
